When will rewards ship?

A quick timeline for ya: - Late Feb: Roller Pro production begins ramping up - March 4 - April 17: This Kickstarter project! - Late April: We’ll send out KS fulfillment surveys - Mid May: ‘Get It Fast’ rewards ship to KS backers - June/July: Roller Pro launches publicly (at full MSRP) - July: ‘Standard Fulfillment’ rewards start shipping to KS backers - Aug: We expect all ‘Standard Fulfillment’ rewards to ship by this month

Note that all of these dates are our high-confidence estimates made at the time of launching this project—they could shift in either direction—and if they do we will communicate that transparently and proactively to backers.

In short, the dates listed on our Kickstarter rewards are when we expect things to ship out. Transit dates for shipments will vary depending on your shipping address, so it could take anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks (rare, but it happens) for your reward to reach your door. More about shipping services in the ‘How will my products ship’ FAQ.

Note that expect Roller Pro will launch to the general public in the June/July timeframe, before many of the ‘Standard Fulfillment’ backers receive their rewards. This might seem unusual, especially for those who have backed a lot of Kickstarter projects in the past. But we are doing it this way by design, in order to work around manufacturing capacity limits that ultimately stem from the fact that Roller Pro is no ordinary roller. Our Kickstarter page and supporting videos dive deep into what makes Roller Pro different. But TLDR, innovative designs often require innovative manufacturing techniques, and it takes time to get those processes to scale. Even with parallel manufacturing facilities, it takes a long time to make Roller Pro.

With known stock limitations and the summer travel season coming in hot, we chose to structure our Kickstarter campaign in a way that will allow us to get some stock to our thousands of dealers across the world in time for the prime luggage shopping season. At the same time, we want to make sure that we are giving our backers the sweetest deal of all…they’re called ‘rewards’ for a reason.

So here’s how it’ll work on the back end:

We’re setting aside about 1000 of the very first Roller Pro units we make and those will be exclusively available to Kickstarter backers who choose the ‘Get It ASAP’ reward. Those bags are only available in Black, and only available in geographical regions where we can quickly get product from our factories to our warehouses—those regions are listed in the reward description. The price for this reward is $525, $75 off MSRP.

The next batch of Roller Pro units off the production line will be used to stock our global dealer network, as well as get some additional stock into our warehouses so that we can make Roller Pro available to the general public in the June/July timeframe. Keep in mind, the price to the general public will be $599.95 USD, and likely higher than that in some international markets.

Once dealer orders have been mostly fulfilled, we will begin shipping rewards out to backers who chose the ‘Standard Fulfillment’ reward. In exchange for waiting a little longer to receive your reward, we’re offering these backers an epic discount of $175 off ($499 price point). If you choose this reward, our roller will likely be for sale at local stores and our website before you receive yours. The epic discount associated with that reward is us paying/incentivizing you for your extra patience.

In reality this whole process is not as simple and linear as what we just explained. With 2 factories producing Roller Pro in 3 colors and shipping them to 6 global warehouses, production and shipping will a continuous flow between now and August. The one thing we can be certain of is that the ‘Get It ASAP’ backers will indeed get their roller bags first. Beyond that, it’s quite possible that some ‘Standard Fulfillment’ backers receive their rewards in July, others August. It’s possible that demand is so high that we have to cap our ‘Standard Fulfillment’ reward and create a new one that doesn’t ship until even later. We just don’t know at this point specifics of demand or production velocity.

What we can guarantee you is that we will work our butts off to get these incredible bags to you as fast as possible, and as we said earlier, we will communicate transparently and proactively about any updates or changes to our schedule.

If this is your first time backing a Kickstarter, note that in order to receive your products you will need to fill out our fulfillment survey. We will send that survey out within a few weeks after the campaign has ended. In that survey we will collect your shipping address, calculate/collect sales tax or VAT, and give you an opportunity to add on additional products to your reward for an exclusive discount.

When will add-ons ship?

For most backers, your add-ons will ship with your rewards. ‘Get It ASAP’ backers will get their add-ons in May, ‘Standard Fulfillment’ backers will most likely get their add-ons with their reward in July or August.

The big exception is the Roller Pro add-on. If you add another Roller Pro to your reward, it will ship in July/Aug, even if you backed the ‘Get It ASAP’ reward. That reward is capped at a specific number of early production units, and we want to give the maximum number of backers the opportunity to partake in this reward.

There could be other scenarios where your shipments are split—there may be a temporary stock outage in a certain warehouse, or it may be more cost-effective to ship your stuff in multiple shipments vs. one big one. Much of this order-splitting is automated in real-time based on rules that we setup in our fulfillment software, so if you have a split shipment, you likely won’t know until you receive your tracking notification.

In the event that you have a split shipment, Peak Design incurs whatever additional shipping cost there is and you will not be charged extra.

How will my products ship and will I get tracking?

DOMESTIC: If you’re in the US, we’ll be shipping your package using a ground service (Exact carrier & service will depend on destination and shipment size). These packages will have tracking information that will work within the US.

INTERNATIONAL: Non-US orders will ship from one of our 5 international warehouses located in the UK, Netherlands, HK, Toronto, and Australia. In order to provide a better fulfillment experience, Peak Design is going to be importing all of our products into these countries prior to shipping them to you. This means that your shipments:

  1. Won’t require duties to be collected on delivery in Canada, UK, EU, HK, and Australia (other countries may have applicable duties, please check with your customs office for specific details. Customers are responsible for paying local sales tax / VAT/GST, which will be calculated and charged when you fill out your fulfillment survey and enter in your shipping information.)
  2. Will arrive quickly and not get held up in customs.
  3. May have tracking, but may not guaranteed (depending on the particular post service, of which there are too many used to name).

Note that we cannot alter the value of your rewards on customs declarations - the value will be declared as the total value of the items contained in the shipment”

Do I have to pay taxes and shipping fees?

In short, yes.

Shipping fees are collected when you back this project. They differ depending on your shipping address, and we set them up to mirror, and in many cases undershoot, the average actual cost of shipping. What’s nice is that you only pay one shipping fee for your reward—you can add on as many additional products as you’d like and your fee will not go up.

Peak Design has an an obligation to register, collect, and remit sales tax in certain USA states and countries worldwide in which certain backers are located.

Taxes are NOT included in the pledge price but will be calculated & charged based on purchaser’s shipping address that will be collected in the fulfillment survey AFTER the campaign has ended.

We would love to collect tax up-front just like every other online sale, but the Kickstarter platform does not have tax functionality. So instead we use a fulfillment software called BackerKit, which is capable of calculating/charging taxes based on your total order amount and shipping location. To see if taxes are collected in your region, please refer to the Peak Design webpage located at https://www.peakdesign.com/pages/faq?a=Taxes-(US-VAT-and-GST)—id–SJ1qVGLwQOWO9vxjYTUanA

What is your policy on returns/refunds?

While all of our products are guaranteed for life (Kickstarter rewards included), we do not offer refunds, returns, or exchanges on items received as Kickstarter rewards.

For one, Kickstarter is not a typical ecommerce platform and lacks the functionality necessary to process returns and exchanges, both from a customer-facing standpoint, and from a back-end accounting and inventory management standpoint. To process just a single return or exchange for a Kickstarter reward takes a signifcant amount of manual back-end adjustments by a number of folks on our team, and thus far we have not found any tools or automations that allow us to provide this benefit at scale.

Secondly, backing a Kickstarter campaign is not quite the same as buying a product outright. Kickstarter is a community crowdfunding platform where backers support creators in exchange for rewards. Rewards are somewhere between a puchase and a gift…you pledge money in support of Peak Design, we send you our newest product in return at an exclusive discount offered nowhere else. The support we get from our Kickstarter backers is what enables us to run and grow our business, gather customer feedback, design new products and improve existing ones.

We appreciate your understanding of our policy and the support you have given us. If your reward truly offers no value to you, here are a few things that you could do in the spirit of crowdfunding…

  1. Sell your reward on the PD Marketplace. Many Kickstarter rewards were purchased below the retail value – if you want to recuperate that value and possibly even more, throw your reward up on the PD Marketplace. It’s the easiest way to buy and sell used PD gear, and it has a 98% sell-through rate. Currently available in the US, UK, and Canada.

  2. Give your reward to a friend. Our products might not work for you, but there are many folks out there who might find them very valuable. We’d love for you to share our gear with a friend of yours.

  3. Give your reward another chance. Some of our products can take some getting used to. All of our gear is designed for use in a variety of scenarios. Maybe it doesn’t work for you right now, but perhaps you’ll find the right time and place in the future.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

When will you send Fulfillment Surveys and what is the purpose of them?

When you back this project, you choose a reward level, maybe some add-ons, then enter your credit card info, and that’s it. You don’t provide a shipping address. You don’t pick which color of bag or color/material of packing cube you want. You’ll enter that information in our fulfillment survey.

WHEN WILL I GET MY SURVEY? We plan to send our fulfillment surveys shortly after the campaign ends in April.

WHAT CAN I DO IN THE FULFILLMENT SURVEY? A whole bunch of stuff: - Provide your shipping address - Pick which color bag you want - Pick color/style for any add-ons that you selected during the campaign - Add additional items onto your reward at exclusive Kickstarter discount prices - Change which reward level you want - Pay taxes/VAT on your total order (because Kickstarter does not provide the ability to calculate/collect taxes)

How do I add more rollers/cubes/accessories to my reward?

You have the ability to completely customize your reward, and doing so is quite easy. When you back this campaign you start by picking a reward. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be shown a list of ‘Add-Ons.’ From there you can add anything else you want.

Last updated: March 04, 2025 07:06

I want to add a PD product that isn't in the Add-On list. How do I do that?

Not all Peak Design products are available in the Add-On list, just the products that we consider to be direct compliments to the Roller Pro. We did this to make it easier for folks—especially new-to-PD folks—to select the right products for their needs. It reduces the risk of delayed fulfillment, by decreasing the overall breadth of SKUs being shipped out at once.

If there’s a Peak Design product that you think should be added to the Add-On list, you can always suggest it in the comments section!

Also, we’ve been know to introduce special Add-Ons in the middle of our Kickstarter campaigns—exclusive bundles, or even brand new products—so keep your eyes out for that.

What Camera Cubes work with / fit in Roller Pro?

You friggin’ bet that all of them do!

Use any PD Camera Cube in Roller Pro—any size, any version (V1 or V2).

The XL was designed to fit perfectly inside Roller Pro, maxing out your camera carry capacity. But you can use smaller cubes in there too, giving you more space around your cube for other stuff. Roller Pro has hidden loops inside that you can clip PD Camera Cubes to (special C-Clips are included with each cube) to keep the cube from moving around. If you’re using the XL cube, or if the area around your Camera Cube is packed with other stuff you don’t really need to use those clips. But if you’re the belt-n-suspenders type, you’re welcome to use ‘em anyway.

Note that the XL cube is taller than the other PD Camera Cubes, allowing it to fill the space all the way up to the brim of the bag, giving you substantially more vertical volume for gear storage. The other cube sizes are shorter, allowing you to pack additional stuff above or below them.

Theres a GIF on our KS page that cycles through a bunch of different Roller Pro packout configurations, showing the versatility of our Camera Cubes and Packing Tools.

How many Packing Cubes / Pouches fit in Roller Pro?

A whole heck of a lot of them.

For the best sense of what all fits in Roller Pro, we’re making a detailed pack-out video. It’s almost done, and once it is we’ll post it in this FAQ, as well as on our KS page.

The longer answer is that it totally depends on what you’re packing inside your PD Packing Cubes and how tightly you’re packing them. They all have a certain amount of ‘squishiness’ to them. The tighter you stuff them, the the bigger and less squishy they become.

Here’s just one example of a possible Roller Pro load-out: - 2x Medium Compression Packing Cubes - 1x Small Compression Packing Cube - 1x Tech Pouch - 1x Small Wash Pouch - 1x Packable Tote

That’s not including whatever you put in the front EDC pockets (laptop, peripherals, etc) in the Organization Panel, as well as behind the Organization Panel.

As we like to say around here, no 2 trips are the same. When you’re considering which Peak Design Packing Tools are right for you, the correct long term answer will always be an assortment. That’s why when you look in our Add-On menu for this Kickstarter, we’ve curated a handful of Packing Cube and Pouch sets that will set you up for success for any trip, anywhere, with anyone. Not only are these Add-On bundles designed to optimize your Roller Pro packout, they’ll also provide indespensible organization for your personal bag. You’ll quickly find yourself using Peak Design Packing Cubes and Pouches in your everyday carry as well. The uses are endless, and with the Kickstarter-exclusive discounts being offered, there’s never been a better time to stock up.

What carry-on requirements is Roller Pro compliant with?

Roller Pro is global carry-on compliant, and has external dimensions (when not expanded) of 56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm (22” x 14” x 9”). These dimensions are widely regarded as the global standard for maximum allowable carry-on bag dimensions.

Thanks to Roller Pro’s unique Slim Drive™ carbon fiber trolley, it has a larger interior packable volume than other roller bags with the same outside dimensions. Standard rollers have handles made from telescoping aluminum tubes. These tubes take up a good deal of space inside the bag—zip open the fabric liner on your current roller bag, and you’ll see 2 big ridges jutting into your cargo space. By significantly reducing the thickness of our trolley handle—something that could only be accomplished by using a much stronger (and coincidentally, lighter weight) material—we eliminated wasted volume inside our bag, letting you fit more.

Note that max carry-on dimensions vary slightly from airline to airline. A quick Google search will yield numerous lists of airline-specific carry-on specs. But a bag that meets the 22”x14”9” global carry on standard will comply with nearly every airline across the world.

Typically, carry-on restrictions are set according to the size of overhead bins. Max carry on size = maximum size of a bag that will fit in the overhead bin on a vast majority of an airline’s fleet.

Roller Pro has another big carry-on advantage, specifically for folks using it as a camera roller. Unlike dedicated camera roller, Roller Pro utilizes instantly removeable camera cubes. If you’re flying with a bag full of camera equipment and forced to gate-check at the last minute, nothing is more terrifying than watching a baggage handler snatch away your kit, which is collectively worth about as much as a 2021 Subaru Outback with low miles and a high trim level, and toss it carefree onto a conveyor belt. With Roller Pro, this will never happen. Just remove your Camera Cube, stuff your personal item in your Roller Pro, and take your precious kit aboard. And because our Camera Cubes are made from durable weatherproof Versa Shell™ nylon, the double gin and tonic you spill on it will bead right off.

How protective / durable / waterproof is Roller Pro?

Travel can beat the snot of both you and your stuff, and the whole point of luggage is to take the beating so your stuff arrives safely. Protection and durability where the number one design considerations when creating Roller Pro—both for regular travel stuff and for camera stuff, which is in a league of its own when it comes to fragility, value, and owner anal-retentiveness. Half of our staff are photographers. We know this. And to make a long story short, when it comes to protection, Roller Pro is a certified beast.

We designed Roller Pro with a unique hybrid construction: it has a rigid polycarbonate shell (like a hard sided roller) plus a durable and flexible fabric skin (like a soft sided roller). The result is what we call a ‘best-of-both-worlds’ design. The rigidity and protection of hard sided luggage, with the functionality and aesthetic of soft sided luggage.

Between the fabric and polycarbonate is a layer of super dense EVA foam. Together, this trio of materials provides a wide range of protection against the many dangers that lurk behind those rubber flaps on the baggage conveyor belts: shock/drops, dents, piercing, abrasion, stains, water, dirt/dust. In fact, while writing this FAQ we just came up with the perfect name for Roller Pro’s protective construction: Turducken Technology™. We haven’t registered for a TM yet (again, just came up with it) but it seems like the right move. Rigid polycarbonate covered with shock-absorbing EVA covered with Versa Shell™ fabric = Turducken Technology™.

MORE ON VERSA SHELL™ For a decade Peak Design has been making Everyday and Travel bags out of a proprietary fabric we named Versa Shell™. Versa Shell™ is 100% recycled, Bluesign approved, and coated with C0 DWR, which is a PFAS-free (more environmentally friendly) water repellency compound. We specifically developed Versa Shell because we wanted an ultra durable abrasion/rip/stain/water-resistant material that looked classically beautiful and aged gracefully over time. When it came time to develop a roller, skinning it with Versa Shell™ was a high priority. Unlike hard-sided rollers, which quickly develop scuffs, scratches, and gouges, Roller Pro takes on a more subtle and consistent patina…something like you’d expect from organic materials like canvas or leather. But unlike those materials, Versa Shell™ resists stains, doesn’t stretch out, and is easily cleaned with a warm wet cloth and mild detergent.

ULTRA ZIPS™ Roller Pro’s zips are weatherproof UltraZips™, a proprietary zipper design that contains ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) thread. This unique thread is many times stronger than standard nylon/poly thread, making UltraZips™ significantly more resistant to abrasion-related failure over time.

TESTING ROLLER PRO How do we know Roller Pro is as durable as we claim it is? We tested the living daylights out of it, that’s how. Roller Pro was put through it’s paces in a wide range of real-life travel and photography environments via a beta program—it even went on-field at the SuperBowl! Aside from user testing, Roller Pro was subjected to all sorts of cruel and unusual punishments via a gauntlet of purpose-built medieval torture devices in our manufacturing facility.

Why doesn't Roller Pro have a built-in TSA lock?

Hoowee! You, my friend, just asked your way into one of the most hotly debated design considerations for Roller Pro!

Many standard roller bags feature a built-in TSA zipper lock. So why didn’t we include one on ours? In short, we think they stink.

In long, here are the problems we have with built-in TSA locks:

First off, they’re bulky. Ever look around to the backside of TSA lock on your roller? There’s a hump that juts into your packing space. Albeit small, it’s another thing you’re forced to pack around.

Secondly, those locks worsen the zipping experience…they typically necessitate oddly-shaped metal pulls made specifically to fit in the lock. They’re unergonomic and just not that pleasant to use. Zipping and unzipping your roller is one of the most frequent interactions you have with it, while locking and unlocking (for most folks) is done rarely, if at all. Which takes us to our next point:

Our user research found that most people…even among heavy travelers and photographers…lock their carry-on roller rarely or never. Nobody at our 80+ person company locks their carry-on roller.

We certainly understand that this feature is very important to some travelers in some scenarios, and that’s why we designed our zipper layout to be easily and securely lockable with any 3rd party travel lock…something that, if you prefer to lock your luggage often, you likely already own.

TLDR, instead of building in a rarely-used feature that adds bulk and degrades user experience, we opted for a simpler design that gives you the flexibility to have a lock, or not. This decision was not arrived to lightly—it was the subject of much debate and research—but in the end we stuck to one of our biggest design guns: innovate and add utility where it matters most, and stay away from needless bells and whistles.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
